Comprehensive imaging services available in Sonora – including 3D mammography

News, Breast Cancer Awareness

March 29, 2021 (Sonora, Calif.) – Adventist Health Sonora is proud to offer the latest technology in imaging services, with appointments and walk-in services available in Sonora and Angels Camp.

“We know that many people have delayed routine exams during the pandemic, posing greater risks from undiagnosed health conditions,” explains Lin Soe, MD, Medical Oncologist/Hematologist at Adventist Health Sonora. “Regular screenings are proven to save lives by allowing us to diagnose disease in its earliest stages when treatments are most successful. Just as vaccination, wearing a mask and practicing social distancing can protect you from COVID-19, having a mammogram, colonoscopy, low-dose lung CT, and other health screenings can equally save your life and prevent devastating illness.”

Imaging exams available by appointment in Sonora now include both 2D and 3D mammography, as well as computed tomography (CT), DEXA Scan, echocardiogram, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET/CT) and ultrasound.

Walk-in X-ray exams are available with minimal wait times at the Health Pavilion, as well as at Angels Camp Rapid Care, Indian Rock Rapid Care, and the main hospital at Adventist Health Sonora.

Why choose 3D mammography?

Digital 2D mammogram technology is state-of-the-art and saves lives; but for women with dense breast tissue, digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) can find some cancers not detected by regular mammograms. In addition, patients receiving 3D mammography have fewer call backs for additional screening and testing.

Women should talk to their health care provider to determine whether 3D mammography is right for them. Additionally, anyone in a high-risk group, such as those with genetic mutations or family history of breast cancer, may also require MRI screening along with annual mammograms in order to detect and treat more aggressive breast cancers in the earliest stages.

Primary care providers can help determine the best screening schedule for each patient’s unique healthcare needs and provide referrals for specific exams and tests.
