Adventist Health Sonora Welcomes Alexa Calfee, MD, MPH

News

Adventist Health Sonora is pleased to announce the addition of obstetrician/gynecologist and robotics-trained specialist Alexa Calfee, MD, MPH, to the medical team at Sierra OB/GYN, which includes Chrystal Bradley, MD; Cicely Chen, MD; Sarah Grimes, MD; Christopher Jones, DO and Matthew Maynard, DO.

In her practice, Calfee cares for women through all stages of life and provides well-woman exams, family planning, prenatal care, gynecological surgery, and more.

Calfee attended the University of California, Davis, where she earned her medical degree and master’s degree in public health. She participated in Rural PRIME (Programs in Medical Education) Leadership Pathway, a state-wide initiative designed to encourage medical students interested in serving rural and underserved populations to pursue careers in primary care.

Prior to her medical training, Calfee earned a bachelor’s degree in biopsychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. While working on her undergraduate degree, she had the opportunity to study abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico.

“I chose to be an obstetrician and gynecologist because it is a nice integration of public health and individual medicine,” she says. “Many of the topics we see in the news – debates over access to contraception and increasing rates of maternal mortality – can be directly impacted by how obstetricians and gynecologists decide to practice medicine.”

“I also love the idea of caring for individuals throughout their entire life, from adolescence to motherhood through menopause,” she continues. “It is a privilege to be a woman’s physician during these special and sometimes challenging times.”

Calfee also has an interest in clinical research and currently has three projects underway, two as the principal investigator. She is a member of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, National Rural Health Association, and American Medical Association and is fluent in English and Spanish.

When not caring for patients, Calfee enjoys spending time with her fiancé and her dog, Scooter, and her pastimes include downhill skiing, dancing, and cooking for friends and family.

Calfee is accepting new patients and may be reached at Adventist Health Sonora – Sierra OB/GYN located at 900 Greenley Road, Suite 922, in Sonora. More information and appointments are available by calling (209) 536-3750.
