Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Earns Second “A” Rating for Patient Safety

News, Awards & Recognition

Adventist Health Ukiah Valley has been recognized as one of the safest hospitals in the nation with a second “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2019 Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes ongoing efforts providing exceptional healthcare. The hospital earned “A” rating in Spring 2019 as well.

Assessing patient safety of more than 2,600 hospitals in the United States, The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of health care committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“We are on a mission to give our community the very best care possible,” shares Jason Wells, Adventist Health Ukiah Valley president. “As a father and resident of Mendocino County, I know we all want exceptional care, right here at home.”

“Being recognized as a Leapfrog ‘A’ hospital again is a testament to the continued dedication and hard work of our providers and staff to provide the highest standards of care to our community. We want our patients to know that when it comes to their family’s care, we are ready to provide an exceptional experience as well as ‘A’ level quality care,” he explains.

“’A’ hospitals show us their leadership in protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this ‘A’.”

“This recognition validates our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional care,” said Lindsey Spencer, patient care executive. Patient safety has always been at the forefront of what we do. It is great to see that we are consistently delivering to an ‘A” level, which means our team is laser focused on providing the highest quality of care and service to our community. We care for our own friends and neighbors and our team is inspired and driven by this commitment every single day.”

More than 2600 hospitals nationwide were surveyed with 868 (33%) achieving a grade of “A”. In California, only 91 out of 275 hospitals received an “A” rating.

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
