Mother knows best: Remembering great pieces of advice from Mom

Every year around this time, we celebrate and honor that one very special person who raised you: mom. And whether yours is with you today or not, chances are that her sage advice has taught you a thing or two about life.

Growing up, you may not have always accepted mom’s advice, but as you matured or even became a parent of your own, you learned to appreciate the love and insight your mother shared. Those eye rolls transformed into gratitude, and her words suddenly found a place in your heart—becoming an indispensable source of real advice that trumped any friend, website or parenting book. And if you’re a mother yourself, chances are you’ve found yourself sounding more like her with phrases and colloquialisms you thought you’d never find yourself repeating.         

Today, in honor of Mother’s Day, we’re remembering some of the greatest life tips from mom. Are any of your favorites on our list?

Relationships

  • Treat others as you would like to be treated.
  • Surround yourself with positivity and happiness. Make sure to surround yourself with individuals who not only make you happy but also exemplify positive qualities that make you proud.
  • Always give your relationships top priority. Even when things are busy, find moments to focus on one another -- even if it’s a simple chat on the porch after the kids have gone to bed. One day, the kids will be off to college, and it’ll just be you two again. Be sure to stay connected with each other.

Parenting

  • The days are long, but the years are short. It may seem hard but try to soak up every single moment. They’ll be newborns one minute and off to college the next. It really happens that fast.
  • Recognize that parenting takes a village and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Sometimes, being a supermom or dad means reaching out to other resources for a helping hand and that is perfectly okay.
  • Always trust your instincts. Nobody knows your child better than you do, so if something doesn’t feel right, do something about it.

Manners and Etiquette

  • Never go to a dinner party empty-handed. Contribute with a side dish or bring a special gift for the host.
  • Don’t return food storage containers empty. If someone brought you a meal with their own food storage container, try to return it with something inside, like a home baked good or even a thank you card tucked in to show your gratitude.

Health and Beauty

  • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Sit down every morning, even if it’s for just a couple of minutes, and eat something healthy to give you the energy you need to start the day right.
  • Enjoy everything in moderation. It’s important to eat your fruits and vegetables, but don’t deprive yourself of the occasional sweet treat, like a slice of birthday cake or a double scoop of ice cream.
  • Wash your face and brush your teeth every night, no matter how tired you are. And don’t forget to floss. This means less painful (and expensive) trips to the dentist.
  • When you head outdoors, always apply sunscreen (even in the winter). It really does prevent wrinkles, not to mention skin cancer.

Wise Words

  • If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
  • A happy mom is a good mom. Take time to take care of yourself so that you can take care of your family.
  • Life isn’t always fair.
  • The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Appreciate what you have in this life.
  • Always paddle your own canoe: just be yourself.
  • Live and let live. You may not always agree with others, but instead of focusing on that, focus on enjoying your life and let them enjoy theirs.
