Five habits that shape your whole day

Five habits that shape your whole day

Published on April 03, 2018

Are you a morning person or more of a night owl? Do you hit snooze more than a few times every morning, or are you ready for the day even before your alarm goes off? No matter your wake-up style, these five habits can kickstart your morning and make way for a more productive and fulfilling day.

Set an alarm for bedtime.

Nothing guarantees a better morning than getting enough sleep every night. Many of us rely on our alarm clocks for waking up, but most of us don’t think of using them as a tool for going to bed. By setting an official bedtime, you’re more likely to stick to an evening schedule that gets you ready for rest. Not sure when bedtime should be? Determine when you need to get up, and make sure to give yourself at least seven hours of zzz’s. If wake-up time is 5:30 a.m., your alarm should be set a few minutes before 10:30 p.m. every night.

Write a nightly list.

It’s hard to get settled for a good night’s rest when unfinished tasks, random thoughts and worries are floating around in your head. Take a few moments every evening to jot down a list of to-dos for the next day to help feel more organized. Sometimes, just putting words on paper can help alleviate anxiety – almost like transferring your fears from your mind over to a piece of paper. This nightly ritual can help you feel more rested, calm and poised to face the next day.

Make your bed.

Sure, it’s a simple task, but that’s the point. By completing a small action item first thing every morning, you’ll start your day already feeling accomplished and ready to take on bigger, more complex tasks.

Eat a good breakfast.

Cliché statement? Maybe. But mom was right. Starting your day with a balanced meal can do wonders for your energy. Incorporate lean proteins, whole grains and fruits into your daily breakfast. Many experts also believe that drinking a full glass of lukewarm water with a few squeezes of lemon helps aide digestion and boost energy levels.

Harness the power of daily affirmations.

“I know what I’m doing.” “I am great at my job.” “I am a loving, caring parent.”  No matter what task is at hand, write out your own affirmations to boost your self-esteem and self- belief. Repeat your affirmations every morning as soon as you wake up – or during your shower –  to jumpstart your day feeling positive, confident and ready to tackle it all.

Some morning habits start at night, and some are exclusive to the light of dawn – but they always start with you. Take a moment to think about your own schedule to develop a routine that makes sense for your lifestyle, whether you’re an early bird or a late riser!
